Gates says Summer Celebration budget will cover higher fireworks cost; organizers add extra amenities

Dan Hoock, director of the Gates Recreation and Parks Department, told the commission May 12 that the budgeted funds for the 2026 Summer Celebration will cover expenses that have emerged so far, including an increased fireworks cost of $10,000 and the rental of an additional bathroom trailer.
Hoock said hiring local bands contributed to savings on entertainment, helping offset the higher fireworks price. He also shared a color-coded event sheet listing confirmed community groups, bands and food vendors and said a postcard mailing would go out about a week before the event to notify residents.
The commission discussed a planned food contest that will include five local restaurants competing with a "garbage plate" dish. Chair Brom Bianchi had asked whether the allocated monies would cover all costs; Hoock answered that the total scheduled is higher than usual and, so far, will cover current expenses.
The discussion was informational; no formal vote was required. The Summer Celebration planning and budget updates were part of the department's regular reporting at the May meeting. The department will continue finalizing vendor slots and promotions ahead of the event.
