PSC advances revisions to Wellesley 'Naming of Public Assets' policy for Select Board first read

The Wellesley Select Board Policy Subcommittee on Feb. 26 reviewed a revised draft of the town’s Naming of Public Assets policy, focusing on updated definitions, criteria for evaluating naming proposals, and a clarified definition of "major gift." The Subcommittee emphasized the need for consistency, transparency, and broader community input before the policy is forwarded to the Select Board.
"I will work with Town Counsel to finalize the revised policy language before it goes to staff for the packet," said Colette Aufranc, a PSC member. PSC members discussed forming an advisory committee to support public engagement and recommended compiling a comprehensive list of town assets with historical information and naming context.
Members suggested coordination with the Historical Commission and proposed that the Select Board explore possible use of Community Preservation Committee administrative funds to support the asset inventory and community outreach. Town Counsel Tom Harrington was invited to a future Select Board discussion to address legal questions on naming authority and gift definitions.
The Subcommittee agreed the draft will be ready for a Select Board first read after the recommended revisions are incorporated and when the Select Board can schedule the discussion.
