Representatives of the Hockey Association presented a conceptual plan to the Mahtomedi Planning Commission to expand the center outdoor rink at the Mahtomedi School District facility to NHL dimensions, install benches and add a refrigeration (ice mat) system intended to extend the skating season.
Planner Hannah Rybak displayed conceptual plans and said she had discussed the project with the Watershed District, which had no concerns. The Hockey Association representatives said they have raised close to $100,000 toward a $1 million fundraising goal by 2027 to fund improvements, including an expanded rink slab and a chiller pad for an ice-mat system.
Chairperson Alex Rogosheski said he supported rink improvements but expressed concern about whether the proposed location offers adequate parking and flagged potentially large electrical costs to operate a refrigeration system. Hockey Association representatives said the School District has allowed parking in its rear lot and would maintain the rinks. Chair Rogosheske suggested the group consider combining fundraising toward an indoor rink located near the high school fields, which he said had already been approved by the School District, and noted that site would be closer to schools and likely offer better parking.
Planner Rybak clarified site ownership: the bathrooms are on city property while the rinks are on School District property. No formal action was taken by the Commission on the presentation; Chair Rogosheske thanked the group for their work and the item will remain an informational proposal pending further coordination with the School District and any necessary permitting.
