Oak Park advisory council approves teal ribbons, updates meeting schedule and hears reports on crime, paving and community events

The Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council on July 26 approved community actions and heard a series of local updates, including a pavement‑rehabilitation timeline, crime and graffiti reports, and announcements about summer events.
The council voted 4‑0 to allow Diane Darling to place teal ribbons and a short message about the Turn the Towns Teal ovarian cancer awareness campaign on community sign boards for 10 days and on the capstones of the monument sign. The motion was made by Derek Ross and seconded by Michael Paule.
The council also approved the meeting minutes from June 28, 2011 (motion by Mike Green, seconded by Alon Glickstein) and adopted a 2011–2012 meeting schedule that includes an August meeting and moves the November meeting to Nov. 29; that schedule change passed 4‑0 on a motion by Derek Ross, seconded by Mike Green.
Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks reported that her office had moved and invited residents to an open house on Sept. 14. Parks said pavement rehabilitation work in west Oak Park had begun and that the remainder of the streets would be repaved within about 18 months. She also congratulated Oak Park recipients of the Girl Scout Gold Award, naming Anisha Rajavel, and wished MAC member Mike Green a speedy recovery after recent surgery.
Local safety and vandalism issues were discussed: MAC member Mike Green reported three graffiti incidents at Oak Park Plaza in the previous month and praised the swift response by VCSD Captain O'Hanlon. Captain O'Hanlon gave a report on crime activity, emphasizing that thefts from vehicles remain a problem and urging residents to lock their cars and remove valuables.
MAC members reported several community events: Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District (RSRPD) will hold a 50th‑anniversary celebration at Oak Canyon Park on Aug. 20 that will include a program with "restricted fireworks," a Neil Diamond tribute, an astronomy event at Oak Canyon Park, and a drive‑in movie at the high school. Council members also raised concerns about erosion along Medea Creek and about scavenging from neighborhood recycling bins.
Chair Derek Ross adjourned the meeting at 9:04 p.m. The MAC scheduled its next meeting for Aug. 23.
