Councilmember Heward told the Thayne Town Council on Aug. 16 that the town is pursuing a Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant to renovate the town tennis courts and convert them into four pickleball courts.
Heward said the town’s estimated match would be about $225,000 and warned the project will cost more the longer it is postponed; he said at some point the courts may need to be closed if not addressed. The council voted to pursue the LWCF grant application with the understanding that the Town would match up to $225,000 if the grant is approved.
Heward also described Parks & Recreation improvements underway: football lights have been installed, scoreboard poles are in place and a scoreboard has arrived; he proposed installing a flag atop the scoreboard pole and a sponsor board to recognize local businesses that contributed labor and supplies.
Why it matters: Converting the underused tennis courts to pickleball would change recreational access and require a significant local match if the LWCF application succeeds. The $225,000 match estimate is the Town’s planning figure; grant approval is required before the funds would be spent.
What’s next: The council authorized pursuit of the grant and committed to a potential local match up to the stated amount if the LWCF award is made.
