Trenton parks board votes to recommend one council liaison and unlimited alternates

The Trenton Parks and Recreation Board voted Nov. 18 to recommend that City Council limit regular council representation on the parks board to a single council liaison, while allowing an unlimited number of council members to serve as alternates who may fill only that liaison’s seat.
Board member Mr. Profett presented the motion to send the recommendation to council. He restated the motion: "parks board is to have one regular member from city council and an unlimited number of alternates from city council," adding that alternates from council may fill only the regular council member’s seat when that liaison is absent. The motion was seconded and approved by roll-call vote.
During debate, members said the limit is intended to prevent a council majority from effectively controlling the volunteer board while still encouraging council involvement and broad community volunteer participation. Several members suggested alternates and liaison terms be revisited later, and noted that mayoral appointment and council approval are required to finalize seats.
Next steps: the parks board will forward the board’s recommendation to the mayor and City Council for consideration and formal appointment.
