Several parks board seats expiring; members debate council representation and recruiting

The Trenton Parks and Recreation Board discussed upcoming vacancies on Oct. 14 and debated whether elected city councilors should occupy multiple seats on the parks board.
Members noted four terms expiring Dec. 31, 2025 — Matt Hill, Amberlye Luna, Christina Lucas and Ray Nichols — and confirmed that some current board members are running for city council. Several members said having multiple councilors on the parks board could undermine the board’s independent advisory role; one member said she would step down if Ray Nichols moved onto the board while she, and others, were elected to council.
Mr. Croucher and other members suggested the parks board ought to ask council to clarify expectations for council representation and to advertise openings to the community. The group agreed to post a call for applications and to encourage interested residents to visit meetings before submitting applications so they understand the time and volunteer commitments. "If there's an interest, we like to see them come to the meetings first," one member said.
Board members said there are no written rules limiting how many council members may serve on the parks board and that the group had operated by custom in previous years. The board discussed the possibility of executive session for future appointment discussions, and members said they would determine vacancies and applicant numbers after the Nov. 5 election.
