Smyth County Board of Zoning Appeals elects 2019 officers, adopts operating procedures and calendar

The Smyth County Board of Zoning Appeals met Feb. 5, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. in the Smyth County Office Building and completed organizational business, electing officers and adopting its operating procedures for the year.
John Saunders, a BZA member from the Park District, opened the session and, after staff member Clegg Williams was appointed temporary chair to oversee organizational items, the board voted to retain its officers for calendar year 2019. BZA member Newell Johnson moved to keep the existing slate; Kim Davidson seconded, and the motion was carried unanimously, resulting in John Saunders being elected chairman, Newell Johnson vice chairman and John DeBusk secretary for 2019. Williams then turned the meeting over to Saunders.
By motion of Kim Davidson, seconded by Newell Johnson and carried unanimously, the board approved the minutes of April 3, 2018. The board then set its 2019 meeting calendar: meetings will be held the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. when an application is filed; if no application is filed, the next meeting was set for January 2020. Finally, Saunders moved to adopt the 2019 Operating Procedures as presented; Davidson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The meeting was succinct: staff members Clegg Williams and Sarah Parris were present; members John Saunders (Park District), Kim Davidson (Chilhowie District), Daniel Sturgill (Rye Valley District), Newell Johnson (Royal Oak District) and alternate Bill Moss were recorded as present; John DeBusk III and Glenn Wheeler were recorded as absent. The board adjourned at approximately 5:38 p.m.
No substantive zoning appeals or contested hearings were recorded in the minutes for this session. The actions taken were administrative housekeeping steps to establish leadership and procedures for the board’s 2019 calendar.
