ECAHF board retains Tom Braaten as chair, keeps Mary Beth Fennell as vice chair

The Eastern Carolina Aviation Heritage Foundation board voted unanimously May 1 to retain Tom Braaten as chairman and Mary Beth Fennell as vice chair.
Ben Hancock moved to keep Braaten and Fennell in their leadership roles; after discussion the motion carried without recorded opposition. The board met at the Havelock Tourist & Event Center and had a quorum present in person and by video conference.
The leadership vote came amid broader discussion about board composition and upcoming seat vacancies. Tom Braaten noted three member terms expire June 30 — Bill Fortney (At-Large), Guy Nelson (At-Large) and Adam Persky (Business seat) — and said the board needs multiple applicants to maintain a diverse membership. Guy Nelson told the board he intends to resign but will remain active on committees.
Board members agreed to recruit additional applicants; Guy Nelson volunteered to draft a membership recruitment email. Braaten said he supports developing term limits and a deliberate leadership succession plan to strengthen governance over time.
The board also reviewed committee assignments and upcoming events during the meeting. The next board meeting is scheduled for June 12, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.
