Route 76 program presents VR trades training pilot and announces $115,000 grant

Kristen Clifford Basil, executive director of the Morgan County Economic Development Corporation, presented Route 76’s workforce strategy to the School District No. Re‑2 Brush board and described a VR-based trades training pilot that partners with Interplay Learning.

Clifford said the program uses immersive modules in HVAC, plumbing, electrical and other trades and can provide pre‑apprenticeship hours and OSHA training. “We did just get a $115,000 grant from chaffa for their direct effect Awards to keep the program going,” she told the board, citing private and foundation interest in scaling the pilot.

Clifford said the district and partners aim to expand from 22 students enrolled last year toward a 50‑student target and that local employers have begun prioritizing graduates for interviews and hiring. She described Interplay’s model as a supplement to hands‑on apprenticeship work: the platform provides short instructional videos, simulations and assessment pathways that local partners say improve retention and readiness.

Superintendent Mara thanked Clifford and noted the program’s potential to connect students to local employers. The board did not take formal action on the presentation; members asked for a fall follow‑up report on enrollment and employer outcomes.

The presentation was briefly interrupted by a local tornado warning; board members confirmed with local authorities that no immediate threat was present in town and resumed the meeting.

What’s next: Clifford offered to share program videos and asked the district to report back in the fall on student participation and progress toward the 50‑student goal.
