Youth-led 'Share the Air' presentation prompts committee to table signage proposal

Committee members raised legal and public-perception concerns, noting that current Virginia law does not give localities authority to enforce smoke-free outdoor ordinances; the committee discussed that the program would be educational and voluntary. Members also debated signage wording that might appear restrictive and acknowledged tobacco’s cultural significance in the region.
After the discussion, Chair Larry Roller moved and Supervisor Dennis Witt seconded a motion to recommend tabling the Share The Air item until further discussion. The motion passed 3-0. The committee did not adopt any signage or enforcement measures at the meeting and directed staff and proponents to return with further information.
