Jim Mon of the Forge County Retired Teachers Association presented a $500 teacher grant to Kimberly Steel at the opening of the Waterloo Local Board of Education meeting. "We are now giving out $500 teacher grants," Mon said as he described the association's broader scholarship work and the new grant program supporting classroom innovations.
Mon told the board that Steel plans to use the funds to buy a popcorn machine and supplies so special‑needs students can operate a small sales business during lunch and occasional afternoons. "This is a true life scale something that the kids can learn and take with them all their life," Mon said, explaining the project will teach counting money, ordering and budgeting.
Kimberly Steel accepted a certificate and brief applause from the room; the grant will be administered through the district treasurer and the association requested the funds be spent during the current school year.
The association also funds $2,500 scholarships for prospective teachers and has more than 300 retired educators in Forge County who support the district through grants and scholarships.
