The Brush School District Board of Education voted to approve a revised hourly classified and bus driver salary schedule designed to maintain a 7% annual increase in total pay while reducing required hourly counts where operationally feasible.
Superintendent Marsha Cody and staff explained the approach: reduce contract/hours in some classified categories then raise hourly wages so affected employees get the same annual percentage increase. "The biggest thing there I just want to highlight the theme is reducing hours but increasing hourly salary so their annual increase is that 7% right," the presenter said. Staff said the plan would affect approximately 123 positions and estimated an approximate $140,000 impact to the general fund if all proposed adjustments are implemented; the superintendent recommended that the board prioritize the change, noting it was part of the transition from a four-day to a different calendar structure.
Why it matters: Board members said the change aims to correct pay anomalies that developed when schedules and calendars were changed and to retain and recruit difficult-to-fill roles such as bus drivers. The proposal included a recommended $3-per-hour raise for bus drivers and a $1.25 hourly increase for some other classifications. Board members asked whether the district could absorb the cost and were told staff will look at options such as not renewing a hail buy‑down to create budget room.
The motion to approve the revised hourly classified and bus driver schedule passed on roll call. No board member recorded a dissent during the roll call vote.
