West Union accepts $19,334 grant for solar lights and story trail; discusses $150,000 Safe Streets project

The West Union Village Council voted Feb. 24 to accept a $19,334.70 grant from the Foundation for Appalachia Ohio to fund solar-panel lighting and a story trail along the path by U.S. 41.
The grant was reported by Jason Francis; the council authorized him as the village’s signer to accept the award. Rachael Hamilton moved to accept and Donna Young seconded; the motion passed on a roll-call vote recorded as all yeas. The village will receive the check after signing and must submit reports for one year as a condition of the award. Council members noted the village previously committed to contributing matching funds if necessary and that the finance chair (Donna Young) will meet to review lighting plans.
Mayor Jason Buda also briefed the council on a $150,000 Safe Streets grant opportunity for streets and sidewalks. Buda said the village’s matching share would be $30,000 and that $120,000 of the project would be reimbursable under the grant terms. Council discussed approving a project plan to support future infrastructure grant applications and noted the need to specify which fund would supply any local match.
Separately, council asked that new hires be added to the municipality’s AirMedCare policy so they will be covered. The village will finalize signatory paperwork for the Foundation grant and proceed with local planning for Safe Streets project submission.
