West Lafayette council adopts fire-contract ordinance, approves three volunteer firefighters

West Lafayette Mayor called the council to order and the body adopted Ordinance 2024-36 on its third and final reading, authorizing the mayor, fiscal officer and fire chief to sign mutual-aid/fire contracts with local townships for 2025.
The council also approved a motion to add three new volunteer firefighters to the department: Jared Danner, who recently moved from Iowa; Craig Todd, who is enrolled in a 36-hour class; and Matthew Woods, who will be scheduled for a 36-hour class. The fire representative said the recruits have been vetted and “we’ve already bened at the station ready to go,” and council voted to accept them.
The fire department provided a summary of September activity: one building fire (an abandoned structure believed to be arson and under investigation), several brush fires, multiple medical assists, and mutual-aid calls. The department reported 16 calls for the month and 56 for the year so far; 112 firefighters contributed response and training hours during the reported period.
The ordinance and the volunteer appointments were handled during the department and legislative reports and were approved by voice or roll-call votes as recorded during the meeting.
The council did not take additional action on the underlying mutual-aid terms at the meeting; the ordinance authorizes village officials to sign the contracts so the agreements can be finalized between the village and participating townships.
