The Town of Atkinson Police Station Location Committee recommended using town-owned land behind the Fire Station as the preferred site for a proposed police station and scheduled a public meeting for 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20 to present plans to residents and seek approval from the Board of Selectmen.
The committee, meeting Oct. 14 and chaired by Brian Boyle, discussed lot and building size but did not set exact dimensions. Members said the parcel behind the Fire Station is municipally restricted from sale to the public, and for that reason the group regarded it as the most logical site for the project.
Committee members said they prefer funding the project through a Raise and Appropriate warrant from the town capital fund, a method they said would help ensure reasonable project costs. The committee did not commit to final costs or a specific warrant amount.
The group also recommended relocating the highway garage that sits behind the Fire Station to Industrial Way and discussed building a new Department of Public Works garage. Members noted the DPW facility would need bathrooms, ADA-compliant features and a connection to a septic system before it could be used.
Votes at a glance: Charlie George moved to accept the minutes from the committee's Oct. 7 meeting; Phil Busby seconded. The motion carried unanimously, 5-0-0.
The committee agreed to hold the Oct. 20 public meeting to gather community input and to seek the Board of Selectmen's approval of the proposed approach. The next committee meeting date was left to be determined; the Oct. 14 meeting adjourned at 7 p.m.
