Waite Hill discusses storm response, road striping and restudy of cell coverage; cemetery gets $3,000 donation

Council members in Waite Hill on Sept. 9, 2024 discussed the local impacts of a recent storm and next steps for public safety and public works.
Stephanie Winterer, reporting for the Safety Committee, and Police Lieutenant Steve Gerics said the police department provided mutual aid to neighboring communities early in the month and that a domestic situation on Creawood Forest is now resolved. Service Director Bob Haynik said the Service Department helped many residents after the storm, rented a stump grinder to remove stumps at Village Hall and reported that the village cemetery fence had been struck by an automobile; there were no witnesses and no suspects identified.
Haynik also said Metcalf Road will be crack sealed and then striped to make snow-plowing easier and safer; the estimated cost for striping is $20,000. Council noted the residual effects of the storm increased demand on the Service Department.
Council discussed the village’s ongoing lack of cellular service and the problem it posed during the tornado and periods of power loss that affected Gardenside Drive and other areas. The council agreed a restudy of cell coverage is warranted; a view-study of a proposed tower has been completed and the terms of a proposed lease will be negotiated and brought back to council for approval. No lease was approved at this meeting.
The Village will receive a $3,000 donation intended for the cemetery; council said it will determine the best method to preserve and improve headstones.
What’s next: Council directed staff to pursue lease negotiations and to return recommended lease terms to council for action. The service department will schedule Metcalf Road crack sealing and subsequent striping work.
