Board appoints David to fill District 1 vacancy after candidate interviews

The Archuleta County School District No. 50 Jt Board of Directors on Aug. 1 appointed David to the vacant District 1 seat after interviewing two candidates.

Board members conducted structured interviews in which each candidate answered the same eight questions from each board member. Andie Ranson and David each described community ties and stewardship priorities; Ranson highlighted experience running youth programs and a focus on parent communication, while David emphasized listening, budget familiarity and teacher recruitment and retention.

After both candidates completed interviews and exited the room for deliberation, board members individually ranked their preferences. A motion to appoint David to the vacant District 1 seat was made and carried; the board announced the selection and planned to swear in the appointee shortly after the vote.

The interview format was described to candidates in advance: one candidate waits in the lobby while the other answers a standardized set of eight questions and each board member asks in turn. The panel said the method helps compare candidates on identical criteria.

Board members framed priorities for the seat around teacher retention, communication with parents and maintaining facilities. Both candidates said they would focus on clear metrics and periodic reviews to track progress.
