Residents press town on Under Canvas wetlands protections and fire-water access

Abutters and residents raised water-quality and fire-safety concerns about the Under Canvas site during public comment at the Town of Surry Select Board meeting on April 16.
Bob Reder said he had been notified as an abutter that Under Canvas will hold an informational meeting and reported conversations with Bill Booth indicating Under Canvas will work with the Department of Environmental Protection on minor issues, including moving some facilities 10 feet back from designated wetlands. George Borowsky said Under Canvas agreed to pay $17,000 for a baseline water-quality study and $3,000 for the first follow-up, and that the company had discussed a $3,000 annual monitoring commitment. He also said Under Canvas offered to build an underground cistern and dry hydrant for town use.
Board staff said they would follow up. Residents raised additional concerns about maintenance of a fire pond on the property, including siltation and whether the pond would remain serviceable for the fire department. Select Board members did not take formal action on the Under Canvas site at the meeting; staff were asked to follow up with the developer and DEP.
