Surry budget shows modest decline; school budget down 2% and includes GSA tuition referendum item

Welgoss said the total school budget decreased by about 2% to $3,768,000 from $3,833,000 last year. Included in the school line items is a General Assistance (GSA) supplemental tuition entry covering 28 children at $1,700 per student; that amount will appear as a referendum article for voters to consider.
The board discussed setting aside another $100,000 earmarked for school improvements. Welgoss proposed placing that amount in a reserve account to keep the funds isolated until the town decides on specific projects.
No formal vote on the reserve allocation occurred at the meeting; the board moved forward with administrative approvals and will return to budgeting details at upcoming sessions.
