Surry board reopens treasurer search, sets audit timeline and approves three warrants

The Surry Select Board on Sept. 17 said it will continue recruiting for the town’s treasurer post while keeping Darcel in place as Town Administrator and tax collector. The board reported it has interviewed one promising candidate and will check professional references before making a hire.
Town staff reviewed the budget process and explained reasons property taxes have increased. Mary Allen said the town had received an email from Mike Carroll and that officials are "pushing for an opening in 2025" of a regional solid-waste facility, a factor staff cited in budget planning and long-term cost assumptions.
The board also set an accelerated audit timeline. After last year’s audit was not completed until February, the board said auditors will begin field work Oct. 2 with the goal of completing this year’s audit by December.
In routine business the board approved three warrants. Mary Allen moved to approve Payroll Warrant #13 for $9,152.95, Accounts Payable Warrant #14 for $479,561.45 and Electronic Payment Warrant #15 for $117,810.59 (which included School Warrant #5: payroll $62,324.26 and accounts payable $50,687.98); Chris Stark seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Actions taken at the meeting were limited to personnel follow-up and routine financial approvals; no formal hires or budget votes were completed at the Sept. 17 session. The board said more information on the treasurer search and audit progress will be shared at future meetings.
