Stone Park public works reports hydrant repairs and pothole patches; police add three part-time officers

Public Works reported completion of annual fire-hydrant maintenance across the village, including greasing and repainting, and said crews repaired a damaged internal bar at the hydrant located at 1723 N Mannheim Road. Crews also patched potholes, cleared weed and garbage at village property, painted light-pole bases, removed Independence Day flags from poles, and hand-delivered letters to residents and businesses affected by an upcoming alley resurfacing project.
Fire liaison Jack Giuffre confirmed public-works staff completed the hydrant testing and presented the fire-and-ambulance activities report for June.
Commander Sarabia reported that three part-time police officers—Lukasz Sztachelski, Ernesto Colon and Anthony Hernandez—have been hired and are progressing through training. Sarabia thanked Mayor Mazzulla for approving work with a grant writer and said the board will need to approve the grant-writer agreement from Administrative Consulting Specialists, LLC at the August 12 meeting. He reported no major incidents or complaints during Fourth of July events.
On fleet status, Commander Sarabia said two of the three patrol cars have had engines replaced and returned to service; one vehicle remains out of service because of a Ford recall and the department has not yet received a resolution from Ford.
Building Commissioner Robert Gonzini reported that the roof of the old convent in the Sports & Entertainment Complex is in worse condition than expected and that the chimney may collapse; the Fire Marshal inspected the building and will submit a report. Gonzini also said the Car Wash development is coordinating with MWRD (the regional water-reclamation authority) and that construction has slowed; a new grocery-store project has an MWRD meeting scheduled for Thursday.
Office Manager Aracely Gutierrez said Administrative Assistant Judy Lopez had been admitted to the hospital and may deliver her baby that evening; the office expects to be short-staffed for roughly six to eight weeks.
Next steps: the Fire Marshal will file an inspection report on the convent roof; the Board will consider the grant-writer agreement on August 12; and public-works crews will continue with alley resurfacing communications and infrastructure maintenance.
