University of Wyoming to solicit 2027 water-research proposals on drought, cyanobacteria and hydrologic variability

The University of Wyoming Office of Water Programs presented a draft FY2027 research request for proposals to the commission and Select Water Committee, which the bodies reviewed and recommended for release.
Greg Kerr, director of UW’s Office of Water Programs, walked through seven main topic areas proposed for the RFP: hydrologic and physical effects of water shortage and conservation activities (including Colorado River Basin issues and extended drought), enhanced streamflow estimation for ungauged streams, public-health topics (E. coli and harmful cyanobacterial blooms), mine-drainage characterization, dam/reservoir operations and sediment impacts (including large reservoir drawdowns), and understanding/responding to future climate-driven hydrologic variability.
Kerr described the RFP as a cooperative program with USGS, the state via WWDC and UW; it funds research and trains graduate students while making results publicly available. He said the advisory committee emphasized keywords including drought, streamflow prediction, indicators of cyanobacterial blooms and reservoir sediment impacts (Flaming Gorge drawdowns were mentioned as an example). Select Water recommended the RFP and the commission approved it for dissemination to faculty researchers.
Staff said the RFP does not obligate funds today but will solicit proposals for competitive awards; topics were chosen to inform state water-management needs and build technical capacity in Wyoming.
