Cohasset reports 'meets requirements' on federal IDEA monitoring, flags technical coding issues for preschool inclusion metric

At the June 3 meeting Mr. Stapleton, presenting the student services and special-education update, told the committee that the district had been found to "meet requirements" under the federal IDEA integrated monitoring review, earning 38 out of 39 possible points (97%). He said the district received full points for compliance and other considerations and that a single performance subindicator did not score full points due to a coding/placement technicality in the student information system rather than a pedagogical deficiency.
Mr. Stapleton explained the performance area in question concerned the percentage of preschool children with disabilities receiving the majority of special-education services in regular preschool settings; the result reflected coding of some students who receive services at external providers rather than being counted as integrated preschool attendees. He also described how indicator 14 (post-secondary outcomes for youth) can be influenced by survey response rates and that the district has worked to gather direct contact information from graduating seniors to improve follow-up accuracy.
The director framed the overall finding as positive—no mandated targeted technical assistance is required this year—but said the district will continue refining data coding, monitoring, and programming (including STARS, the therapeutic learning center, language-based supports and partial inclusion programs) and will prepare corrective-action evidence as needed for the next review cycle.
The committee received the update; no formal action was taken beyond acceptance of the report.
