SELMA, Ala. — The Selma Appearance Commission approved a modified storefront design for 117 South Street on June 15 and allowed the applicant to choose between two approved options regarding lighting.
Staff described two façade options from the applicant, saying the recessed‑entry version conflicted with historic‑district standards while a second version without added lighting was consistent. Applicant Frank Kawuchcci, who was present and sworn, said he revised the design after prior feedback and argued that exterior lighting — including goose‑neck fixtures — would improve nighttime streetscape and pedestrian safety. “I think the intent with that was not just to light up my sign at night time, but really to provide additional light...on the sidewalk,” Kawuchcci said.
Commissioners discussed the design, materials and colors and indicated support for both the modified storefront and added lighting as a streetscape enhancement. The board ran through the four findings of fact, found the modified storefront (version two) acceptable, and voted to approve the certificate of appropriateness while giving the applicant flexibility to include lighting. Commissioners authorized the presiding officer to sign the final order reflecting the approved option.
The approval clarifies that the recessed‑entry option was not approved but that the applicant may proceed with the alternative storefront, with or without the lighting option, consistent with the approved findings.
