Southampton directs Land Development Board to probe Block 602 lots for redevelopment

The Southampton Township Committee on June 17 adopted Resolution 2025-87 directing the Township Land Development Board to conduct a preliminary investigation to determine whether all or a portion of Block 602, Lots 14 and 14.02 meet the statutory criteria for designation as an area in need of redevelopment under N.J.S.A. 40A:12A-6.
Mayor Ronald Heston said a special Committee meeting is scheduled for June 27 at 2 p.m. to verify the Land Development Board's action on a fair-housing plan; Heston said the township must submit the plan to the state by June 30 to avoid potential fines. The Committee approved the redevelopment-referral resolution by unanimous vote following the meeting's executive session.
Solicitor George Morris notified the Committee after executive session that three resolutions required action; the redevelopment referral was one and passed with all five members voting in the affirmative.
The investigation authorized by the resolution is a preliminary step under state redevelopment law; if the Land Development Board finds the statutory criteria are met, the Board would pursue further studies and public-notice steps required under N.J.S.A. 40A:12A-6. The resolution does not itself adopt a redevelopment plan or change property ownership; it requests the preliminary inquiry only.
