Trustees report major records cleanup, plan Revolutionary War Patriots’ Tour and to revisit green-burial site

Trustees told the March 26 meeting that volunteers have devoted extensive time to cleaning and reconciling cemetery records, and they announced a planned Revolutionary War Patriots’ Tour while agreeing to revisit a proposed green-burial site.
Trustee Sue Christensen and Trustee Peggy McCrea reported they have logged more than 80 hours comparing work orders, deeds, the present computer database and cemetery cards to align records, working backward from 2025 toward 2019. They said that, as weather permits, they will perform visual on-site checks to confirm database entries. Peggy McCrea asked whether the town could restore the historic WPA Section/Lot/Grave charts to the cemetery website; the charts previously appeared on the site but disappeared when the town changed computer systems. Chairman Ryan Fitzpatrick said he had requested that the town office include a list of the year’s Thomaston deaths in the Annual Report as had been done in earlier years.
Assistant Sexton Ron Gamage raised the subject of green burials and reported that he and Trustee Pete Lammert have identified an area west of the crematory that could serve that purpose; trustees agreed to revisit the idea under New Business at a future meeting. Ron, speaking also as a member of the THS Board of Directors, announced that the Thomaston Historical Society will partner with the Cemetery Trustees on a Revolutionary War Patriots’ Tour for Sections 1 and 2 of the Village Cemetery as part of Nation’s 250th celebration; the tour is scheduled for Flag Day, Sunday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m., with an individual at each veteran’s gravesite to provide information.
The trustees also heard a Sexton report that avenues were not plowed in February and March and that trash barrels had become full; Trustee Pete Lammert said Public Works does not empty those barrels and that he has been handling that task. The group set preliminary items for the next meeting, including the green-burial status, additional cemetery signage, and the scope of grave repairs.
No ordinance changes were reported from the Select Board during Old Business. The trustees adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
