School staff report strong early participation in Sun Meals summer feeding program

"We had 1,543 students fed" on the program's busiest day, Miss Curry said, and staff reported increasing registrations as word spread. The kits are shelf-stable to avoid preparation needs; staff encouraged families who could not use a full kit to consider donating portions to local food pantries.
Staff said federal reimbursement covers the program and noted the district can claim weekend days under the seven-day kit model, which increases reimbursement relative to single-day meal programs. The committee applauded the program as a "win-win" that supports families while returning modest positive revenue to the division's nutrition program through federal reimbursement.
Staff will continue to track participation and provide statistics to the committee through the weekly updates or at the next meeting.
