The Helotes City Council on June 11 approved multiple routine budget and event items: the Bexar County Appraisal District’s 2027 budget, the Bexar County Metro 911 Network District’s FY2027 financial plan, a fireworks-display permit and an FY2026 budget amendment transferring $14,344.08 to the fire department’s capital outlay for pump refurbishment of Engine 2.
The council approved the appraisal-district and Metro 911 budget proposals without discussion, each passing unanimously. The fireworks permit for a July 2 event at the Clodius Festival Grounds on Leslie Road was approved; staff estimated $22,000 for the event, which will start at 6:00 p.m. with fireworks around 9:15 p.m. The permit was approved 4-0.
During the budget-amendment discussion, Chief Deer answered questions about the pump refurbishment and the engine’s service life. He said Engine 2 is 27 years old and currently in reserve status; after pump and running-gear work he expects the engine can remain in service until about 2030. Chief Deer noted rising replacement costs, saying a fire engine bought in 2019 cost just over $600,000 but a similarly specified engine today would cost about $1.4 million.
The council voted 5-0 to transfer $14,344.08 from unreserved fund balance to the fire department’s capital outlay to cover the pump refurbishment overruns.
