Mayor, utilities report progress on flood recovery; city offers dumpster sites and outlines natural gas option

Mayor Plavin and city utilities staff briefed the council Sept. 3 on flood recovery and utility matters following the Aug. 8 flash floods.
The mayor thanked city departments and contractors for emergency response work and said the city set up five temporary dumpster locations that residents used to dispose of water-damaged items. He said the city is coordinating with local nonprofits including United Way and the Salvation Army to develop a voucher program to assist residents with replacement costs and that more information will be forthcoming.
Utilities Director Rediker described sewer main cameraing and jetting continuing through September to identify and address areas that could contribute to flooding; staff reported minimal locations needing repair so far but said the work will continue. He also noted residents should expect outreach from natural gas marketers as September and October are the typical marketing months.
Rediker explained the city's natural-gas aggregation renewal begins Nov. 24, will run for two years, and offers a fixed price of $4.12 per MCF for residents enrolled through the city's program (IGS). He said customers may find slightly lower market offers on the Public Utility Commission website but that the city's aggregation provides stability; service enrollment and switching instructions were provided.
Council thanked staff for quick emergency repairs and discussed the possibility of making the temporary dumpster effort an annual spring/fall cleanup, with follow-up coordination with the Tri-County Solid Waste District for electronics and tire collections.
