District lauds intensive active‑shooter exercise; after‑action report and joint session planned

School leaders told the committee Oct. 14 that the district ran a large‑scale active‑shooter simulation on Oct. 4 to test response protocols and strengthen collaboration with police and fire. The exercise, organized with an outside contractor, involved student actors playing victims, staged smoke and sound effects, and multiple rotating scenarios so first responders could test tactics and decision‑making.
The presenter called the exercise "one of the most intense" training events they had observed and said it improved responders' coordination as the day progressed. Committee members and staff praised the efforts of school resource officers and described plans for a debrief and after‑action report; they also discussed bringing the topic to a joint executive session with town leaders to review lessons learned.
Assistant Superintendent Pete Haviland and other staff outlined the district's broader safety work, including a multi‑domain safety plan (leadership, preparedness, prevention, well‑being, climate and operations) and ongoing training. "We're lucky that we work and live in North Attleboro…this town is walking the walk on school safety," a district presenter said.
The committee expressed support for continuing the work and noted that follow‑up reporting and potential agenda time for detailed review would be appropriate.
