Committee sees updated renderings for MSBA high‑school project; timber structure, distributed dining highlighted

District staff presented updated design renderings and a progress report on the MSBA‑funded North Attleborough High School project during the Oct. 14 School Committee meeting. The presentation emphasized the main‑entrance 'Main Street' concept, a heavy‑timber structural spine, an auditorium cross‑section, extended learning areas and distributed dining designed to offer varied student seating and breakout spaces.

A presenter described the timber structure as a key aesthetic and acoustic element, saying the design team visited UMass Amherst to review similar laminated‑timber construction and that engineered timber decking combined with acoustic barriers and concrete topping will mitigate echo in large spaces. "The timber is the star of the show…it's spectacular," the presenter said.

Staff reviewed base‑bid materials (laminate flooring) and an add‑alternate (terrazzo) should budget allow, and explained the design process, which will require bidders to price multiple finish options. The committee discussed sightlines, elevator placement, security 'man‑trap' entry, and where distributed dining spaces will be located to reduce overcrowding in a single commons area. Staff said students and furniture vendors will be involved in testing and selecting final furniture.

Committee members expressed appreciation for the level of detail and noted the project is moving into cost‑estimation and final material selections ahead of bidding. No formal vote on the MSBA project occurred at this meeting; staff said updates will continue as the project advances.
