They emphasized on‑ and off‑ramps so students who struggle can return to Math 8 in 8th grade, and noted accommodations in individualized education plans (IEPs) and 504 plans would remain.
Committee members and parents in the room asked whether the approach would overburden teachers and how students would be selected. Staff responded they used five data metrics to avoid overreliance on any single test and that teachers supported the model as a way to give students more time to learn algebra concepts. One parent praised the plan as a way to reduce stress for students who had to cover two years of content in a condensed timeframe.
The committee did not take a vote but received the update and directed staff to continue refining the selection rubric and implementation details for the coming year.
