Members of the district advisory committee (DAC) presented a prioritized top-10 list of budget recommendations to the Brush School District board, focusing on student and staff safety, staffing retention and key facility projects.
The subcommittee recommended first addressing the radio repeater and VDA to restore reliable in-building emergency radio communications, which it characterized as a student-safety issue. The group also prioritized ensuring elementary schools have code- and ADA-compliant doors and asked the board to revise certified and classified salary schedules to improve recruitment and retention. "Retention is a big priority," the presenter said, recommending salary-schedule adjustments for certified, classified and administrative staff.
Other prioritized items included filling open teaching positions to avoid large class sizes, evaluating the high-cost BC site plan in phased stages to avoid rework, addressing parking-lot lighting for staff safety, completing greenhouse site dirt work and repairing Beaver Valley exterior doors and site access. The committee described its ranking process as reviewing facility requests through four lenses—student impact, alignment with the strategic plan, urgency/need and cost-effectiveness—and delivering recommendations to help the board prioritize budget decisions.
The superintendent said the committee's recommendations will inform the March 31 board work session and the upcoming budget process. The board did not vote on funding at the meeting; members were expected to use the DAC list to direct staff and the incoming director of finance ahead of the budget adoption.
