The West Union Village Council approved hiring two police officers and authorized the purchase of a used patrol vehicle during its April 28 meeting.
Chief of Police Shane Young reported Officer Ethan Lummer resigned April 24 and requested permission to hire two replacements: Elijah Pelcha, an academy graduate at a starting rate of $21 per hour with a May 18 start date; and Coby Murrell, a certified officer with prior service, at $24 per hour pending restoration of certification (anticipated in mid-June). Council approved the hires; one member abstained due to prior association with the department.
Young also recommended purchasing a fully equipped 2015 Chevy Tahoe negotiated to $18,995 and selling a 2017 Dodge Charger that had about 106,000 miles and significant maintenance needs. Council voted to buy the Tahoe and sell the Charger, and agreed to keep the 2010 Dodge Avenger as an extra vehicle.
Chief Young reported monthly call totals (March 143 calls; April 64) and said nuisance enforcement letters for weeds and junk vehicles have been issued to multiple properties; he and the solicitor will coordinate follow-up on penalties and Land Bank implications.
Next steps: new hires will start pending background and certification checks as noted; vehicle acquisition will proceed per council authorization and resale of removed equipment will be handled administratively.
