West Union moves on sewer upgrades: Verdantas contract authorized and federal grant notice

The West Union Village Council on April 28 authorized the Village Administrator to execute a contract with Verdantas, LLC for engineering services to design and construct ultraviolet (UV) disinfection for the village sanitary sewer system, and was notified of potential federal funding for related infrastructure work.
Resolution 2026-14, authorizing the Verdantas contract, passed by roll call vote with all members voting yea. Consultant Kent Bryan and Danielle Steinhauser (Verdantas) provided updates: Bryan said the contractor on the Panhandle sewer property is bankrupt and Verdantas will propose remedial options; Steinhauser said the Safe Streets draft plan was circulated to the steering committee and Verdantas will help evaluate an SR 41 walkway extension.
Mayor Jason Buda told council he received an email from Representative David Taylor’s office indicating the village has been approved for roughly $2 million in federal funds toward SR 41 work (to Lee Street) and sewer plant repairs, but the amount "may be less" when it moves through appropriations and final approval is pending.
Separately, Councilmember Jason Francis reported the village has 13 sewer pumps needing replacement, with an estimated total cost of $269,000 and an available ARC grant that would contribute $250,000 (with a 30% match requirement). Francis asked the grant committee to meet within the next 30 days to prepare a letter of intent and application.
The Verdantas authorization combined with the grant prospects sets several near-term tasks: finalizing engineering scopes and costs for the UV disinfection project, evaluating contractor remediation at the Panhandle site, preparing ARC and other grant materials for the pump replacements, and tracking federal appropriations for the SR 41/plant repairs funding.
Next steps: Verdantas to proceed under the authorized agreement; grant committee to meet to draft a letter of intent for the ARC grant; staff to track federal appropriation and return to council with details and any required local match commitments.
