AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Austintown Township Board of Trustees on March 3 adopted measures to declare several properties public nuisances and ordered abatement and junk-vehicle removal under state law.
By unanimous vote the board approved Resolution #25-03-03-06 finding four parcels — 30 North Kimberly Avenue; 3850 Monaca Avenue; 5018-5030 Winthrop Drive; and 409 Wyndclift Place — constitute public nuisances under Ohio Revised Code 505.87, citing accumulated junk, debris, a fallen tree, overflowing trash and a mattress stored in exposed view. The resolution orders property owners to abate or make provision for abatement within seven days (four days for repeat violations within 12 months) or the township will abate and assess expenses as a lien on the property, with a $500 minimum charge stated in the resolution.
The board also passed Resolution #25-03-03-07 finding an apparently inoperable 2008 Mazda with an expired temporary tag and a flat tire parked in an exposed manner at 4689 Woodhurst Drive, Unit 1 constitutes a public nuisance under Ohio Revised Code 505.871 and ordered removal within 14 days after notice.
Why it matters: The resolutions authorize enforcement actions that can lead to township-funded abatement and the placement of liens to recover costs. Owners have short timelines to comply before the township proceeds.
Next steps: Zoning staff will issue notice to property owners and begin abatement procedures if owners fail to comply within the timelines set in the resolutions.
