Council approves Ohio Street two-way, Hunter Woods stop signs and grant; several traffic ordinances introduced

At its June 15 meeting the La Porte Common Council approved multiple street- and infrastructure-related measures and introduced several traffic ordinances for further consideration.
Ohio Street (two-way): The council amended the agenda to introduce and immediately adopt an ordinance amending ordinance 94-3-46 to make Ohio Street two-way from Robert Street to Philadelphia Street, citing the fire department’s request to reduce response times. Councilman Buchanan moved to suspend the rules and adopt the ordinance the same evening; the motion passed by voice vote.
Hunter Woods stop signs: The council suspended rules and adopted an ordinance placing stop signs on Deer Trail at Seavers Road and at Park Street in the Hunters Woods subdivision to address safety at the new development’s entrances.
Introduced (first reading/moved to future meeting): - A four-way stop ordinance at Rumley Street and Jefferson Avenue (introduced by Councilwoman Ficus; set for July 7). - A no-parking ordinance on both sides of Tyler Street from Jefferson Avenue to Maple Avenue (introduced by Councilwoman Huffman; set for July 6). - An ordinance to vacate an east–west alley between Lot 20 and Lot 22 in Block 1 of Andrews Addition was read and scheduled for public hearing on July 6; petitioner Scott Roberts described safety and property-damage concerns.
Grant and financial agreements (National Guard utilities): The council approved a resolution and a financial-aid agreement with the Indiana Finance Authority under the Supplemental Drinking Water and Wastewater Assistance Program. The project’s total awarded bid was $2,834,147.11; the state grant portion is $2,250,000, leaving a city balance of $584,147.11. A contingency amount of $415,852.89 was discussed; staff said unused contingency will be returned to the city. The council authorized execution of the grant agreement and related instruments and approved the financial-aid agreement the same evening.
Budget transfer: The council also approved a routine resolution transferring small amounts within the 2026 budgets (examples included $2,500 to repairs in general fund code enforcement and $17,019.96 to winter operations).
Votes and procedure: Several safety-driven street ordinances were adopted after a motion to suspend the rules and a voice vote. Other traffic items were introduced for later consideration or hearing; the alley-vacation ordinance followed published notice and will proceed through the scheduled public hearing process.
