Merrick DPW requests $15,000 to replace firefighter bailout kits

The village’s head of DPW asked trustees to approve $15,000 to replace about 20 firefighter self-rescue, or bailout, kits that must be replaced within 10 years of purchase under New York State requirements.
"We're asking for $15,000 to go and make these replacements as needed," the DPW head said, explaining that the kits were first purchased in 2009 and require periodic replacement rather than a single large purchase.
He told trustees the replacements had been factored into the capital program over the last decade-plus but not into the operating budget, and recommended staggering replacements so the village does not face a large one-time burden. Board members encouraged adoption of a multi-year capital plan to schedule similar equipment replacements and avoid spikes in the operating budget.
The board placed the item on the regular meeting agenda for approval; no formal vote was recorded in the work session.
