Town Board restores golf-course exemption allowing limited use of power tools outside public hours

The Town Board of the Town of Mamaroneck on Sept. 18 unanimously adopted an amendment to local law No. 1 of 2024 to restore a historical exemption permitting golf courses to operate certain power tools, including leaf blowers, outside the hours applied to the general public.
Bill, speaking for the board during the public hearing, said the exemption was removed inadvertently when the town separated the leaf-blower rules from the Power Tool Law earlier this year. "The removal of it was inadvertent, and this particular law, if it's passed, will restore the exemption that the golf clubs had historically enjoyed," he said.
The board opened a public hearing and solicited comments; none were offered before members moved to close the hearing and vote. A motion to adopt the local law was made, seconded and approved with all members voting Aye.
Town officials said the amendment aligns Mamaroneck with similar provisions in neighboring Westchester communities, which use exemptions for golf courses because of the nature of their operations. No changes to enforcement procedures or fines were discussed during the meeting.
The local law was adopted at the meeting and will be recorded in the town's legislative records. The board did not specify an effective date during the discussion at the meeting.
