Vanlue Council approves water-plant valve purchase and $15,500 softener rebuild

Vanlue Mayor Robert Wells and the village council on Feb. 24 approved immediate repairs to the municipal water system, including purchase of six replacement valves and a full media rebedding of the water softeners.
The council voted 5–0 to approve a Kurita quote for six new valves at $1,110 and separately approved a $15,500 quote from Hempy Water to remove and rebedd the softener media, restoring near-new performance. Becky Nye moved to approve the softener rebuild; Jeri Wenger seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Village Administrator Leo Hendricks told council Hempy supplied a 77-page cleaning procedure but declined to perform chemical cleaning due to liability concerns and recommended full media replacement as the longer-term solution. Hendricks said the work will likely be scheduled in spring when weather permits and would take about two days; several valves will also be replaced at that time.
Hendricks said the EPA has been notified of the extended timeline and that USG Water expects to install a vent on the system in early March, weather permitting. The mayor said staff will convene a small committee (including the fiscal officer and council members) to review water-system costs and update a five-year pro forma to evaluate potential rate adjustments to cover needed capital work.
The approvals were recorded as motions in the minutes: the valves motion (moved by Amy Wiseley, seconded by Jeri Wenger) and the Hempy Water rebuild motion (moved by Becky Nye, seconded by Jeri Wenger). Council adjourned at 8:05 p.m. after the vote.
