Vanlue reports SWAP grant award, EPA triennial visit and ongoing water-system work

Village Administrator Leo Hendricks told the Aug. 26 council meeting that the village completed an EPA triennial visit on Aug. 23 with no major immediate problems noted, though the inspector asked the village to improve maintenance-record logs.
Hendricks said the village has inspected the water tower and wet well tanks and is awaiting a written evaluation to identify needed repairs and costs. Staff have begun hydrant flushing and valve exercising and continue replacing meters and targeting older meters that under-report usage.
The village was awarded a $14,900 Source Water Area Protection (SWAP) reimbursement grant; Hendricks said the funds must be spent within six months. He also reported Paystar online payments for the July cycle totaled $4,368 from 43 customers and that there were 17 delinquencies with two disconnects executed during the month.
Hendricks said he is preparing a five-year forecast to evaluate potential future water-rate increases and that the mayor will form an 8—10-person committee to develop a Source Water Area Protection Plan. Staff will continue to work with Hancock County on catch-basin cleaning and with the village engineer on OPWC grant submissions and paving schedules.
The council did not take formal action on rate changes during the meeting; the administrator noted additional work and reporting steps required by state regulators and by OPWC grant timelines.
