Chief Garver updated the village council on Sept. 12 about department staffing, equipment and recent incidents. He said two newly hired female officers are in field training and should be cleared to patrol on their own next month. The chief also ordered a 2024 vehicle to replace the K9 unit’s older Tahoe to improve fuel economy and fulfill vehicle needs.
Garver described a late-night burglary at the Marathon convenience store in which three juveniles forced doors open and stole items; the sheriff’s office responded, one suspect was detained and all three were ultimately identified and referred to the juvenile prosecutor. The chief said the event generated significant community attention on social media the day after the incident.
The chief also summarized mayor’s court statistics through the end of August: 193 cases heard, about $21,000 in assessed costs (much of which goes to the state or county), an average fine around $52, and that most enforcement and tickets have been for motorists passing through town. He emphasized the auxiliary officer program uses part-time volunteers who typically work one eight-hour shift a month.
Ending: Council thanked police and volunteers for festival support and accepted the update; no formal council action was taken.
