Roanoke City reopens redeveloped Eureka Recreation Center after $14.4 million investment

Roanoke City held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the redeveloped Eureka Recreation Center, opening an expanded facility that leaders say will serve as a neighborhood hub.

An agency official for Roanoke City said, "This $14.4 million investment represents the city's single largest project investment in parks and recreation history." The official also described new amenities including an expanded community side with an open gym and spaces for meetings and gatherings.

The presenter, who identified themself as the project's artist in residence since 2022, described community engagement in selecting art and shaping the center. "You will see two murals that were done by S. Ross Brown who's a Richmond-based artist," the presenter said, adding the artwork "pays homage to our rich and diverse community here in Northwest."

Officials highlighted sustainability features built into the redevelopment. "One of the really neat aspects is the geothermal and solar system," the presenter said, noting the city views those systems as evidence of a commitment to sustainability.

City representatives emphasized the center's role in showcasing Northwest Roanoke. The presenter said the renovation gives the neighborhood a place to display local pride to the broader community and called the site a "great asset for the community."

The ceremony combined brief remarks about the project's history — the presenter said the building had not been renovated since it opened in 1965 — with acknowledgements of the artist-led elements and technical upgrades. No votes or formal actions were recorded at the event.
