Castine Selectboard approves warrants, renews liquor license and extends grant-writing contract

The Town of Castine Selectboard approved a General Fund warrant for $217,244.38 and a second warrant for $467.50 at its Aug. 19 meeting, motions made by Chair Gordon MacArthur and seconded by Dan Leader. MacArthur said the larger warrant covers about 38 items, the largest of which pays Hancock County taxes.

The board’s business also included the routine renewal of a liquor license and the extension of a professional services contract tied to the town’s grant-seeking efforts.
What was decided: the board renewed the liquor license for Danny Murphy’s Pub with no complaints reported to the Town Office this year. The Selectboard approved extending grant-writing services provided by Ina Schonberg, moving the contract end date from June 30, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2024; Town Manager Derik Goodine was authorized to sign the extension.
Other manager items: Goodine reported the town ordered and paid about $122 for parking-violation notices and expects reimbursement; he provided a FEMA update (Fort Madison paperwork signed; other projects including Water Street and Emerson Hall remain pending), said a State Street stop sign vandalized with white paint will be replaced soon, and noted staff are investigating a damaged picnic table at Backshore Beach (the table may have failed due to age).
What’s next: the Selectboard scheduled a work session tied to other agenda items and will continue awaiting FEMA paperwork and the results of staff follow-up on the damaged waterfront furniture.
