The Castine Selectboard on Aug. 5 voted to form an ad‑hoc committee to begin planning two upcoming town commemorations: a smaller slate of programs for a 2026 American Revolution observance and a larger series of events for the 2029 Penobscot Expedition anniversary. The board approved forming a single committee and named Cam Brien acting chair until members elect officers.
Board members discussed the workload and marketing challenges. Resident Helen Miller said marketing two different events would be difficult for a single committee. Selectboard member Dan Leader responded that initial research can begin without expense, describing 2026 as a “soft start” and noting that contacts, including in England, could assist preparations for the larger 2029 observance. The motions to form the committee and appoint Cam Brien as acting chair passed 3-0.
The Selectboard noted that the 2029 anniversary could attract Tall Ships and that the town may consider allocating planning funds in future budgets. The committee is expected to report back to the Selectboard once it has organized and set goals.
