The Town of Windsor Select Board on May 13 heard a discussion between Town Manager Theresa L. Haskell and resident Kevin Ready about how Maine’s Paid Family Medical Leave and the Earned Paid Leave law should apply to members of the Windsor Fire and Rescue Department.
Board members and attendees questioned whether fire and rescue personnel qualify as "true volunteers" under state law, a determination that could affect whether those individuals accrue paid time off under the town’s policies. Theresa L. Haskell said she is gathering additional information about the laws and the town’s paid-time-off accruals and that she and Ready will continue the conversation as more details become available.
The exchange occurred during the public comment portion of the May 13 meeting; no formal vote or policy change was taken. The Select Board earlier entered and exited executive session on a separate personnel matter and later returned to closed session for a second personnel discussion. Those executive sessions were conducted under 1 M.R.S.A. §405(6)(A), as recorded in the minutes.
