Kurtz Brothers to submit mulch‑management and basin plans after Bridgeview fire; board gives conditional approval

Kurtz Brothers told the Valley View Planning Board on Oct. 22 that it has installed three of six planned stormwater basins at the Bridgeview site and will submit revised basin plans and a formal inventory and fire‑prevention plan after a recent raw‑stock palette fire.
Company representative Matt Malone said the first three basins were built to protect the southern neighbor from flooding and that remaining basin designs are being revised with the project engineer and Donald Bohning & Associates; he told the board the company hopes to install the remaining basins “as soon as possible — perhaps by the end of 2024.”
Fire Chief Ken Papesh and Malone discussed the October fire that began in raw materials used for mulch production. Papesh asked for a formalized plan for inventory management and pile movement; Malone agreed to submit one. Malone described current mitigation steps — pile rotation and 36‑inch temperature probes — and said the company is exploring deeper probes and compacting techniques used elsewhere to reduce airflow within stockpiles.
The board granted Kurtz a conditional, two‑year approval for the requested topography alterations at 5603 Canal Road, with the requirement that Kurtz submit revised plans and the fire‑prevention plan to the fire chief and village engineers for distribution and review. Commissioner Mike Bertovich encouraged investment in longer probes and active monitoring; Malone said he would contact suppliers and submit a plan to Chief Papesh.
The Planning Board will review documentation and revised plans as they are submitted; the next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 12, 2024.
