Smith Valley Park board reviews maintenance projects, seeks volunteers for irrigation and repairs

The board approved the meeting agenda and the April 6, 2026 minutes after motions by Brandt Hiles and a second by Alice Horton. The treasurer reported a projected budget balance of $52,456.50. The board also heard that reported volunteer hours total 125.5 and that park-use requests and meeting materials are available via the Lyon County website and the email svparkboard@lyon-county.org.
Why it matters: Dressler Park will host Division 1A softball and baseball tournaments May 14–16, creating short-term scheduling and field-preparation needs. Board and staff updates Judge Smith told the board the arena generator and supporting building structure are now in place but that the unprotected structure will require repair and securing to its concrete slab. He reported other routine maintenance items, including weeds in parking and field areas, and said robotic mowers used at other parks have reduced weed problems and “may help us someday,” indicating interest in reviewing similar equipment for Smith Valley.
Board members discussed Little League field work: the new practice field already has weeds in the infield, and the Rotary Interact group will not be able to mobilize volunteers to refurbish dugouts as originally hoped. County staff (referred to in the minutes as Nathan) indicated the county would try to complete the dugout work before state playoffs. The minutes also record that a booster contact, Dave Vick, has approached the board about donating a new scoreboard for the girls softball field.
Volunteers and small purchases The board discussed forming a volunteer summer irrigation schedule to ensure fields and turf are maintained. On a separate agenda item, the board considered requesting that the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approve buying a small number of concrete bags to plug open arena post tops where wasps and yellow jackets are nesting. Judge Smith said he would check whether county maintenance could supply about four bags; the minutes do not record a board vote or purchase approval on that item.
Other notes Lyon County Commissioner Dave Hockaday reported on community events including a flag dedication at Rosie’s Place, a July 4 fundraiser dinner and cemetery cleanups, and noted the historical society is overseeing maintenance at Valley View cemetery. The board set its next regular meeting for June 1, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Smith Valley School Library.
