An Eagle Scout candidate presented a community composting pilot to the Borough of Westwood Environmental Advisory Committee on March 16, and the committee voted to contribute $500 from its budget.
Nico Doell outlined the project: "an 8' x 12' shed for collecting compost has been completed at the DPW center," he said, and 50 volunteers have been chosen for the spring pilot, which the candidate said will launch on Earth Day. Doell reported the project budget is $6,500 and that about $2,500 has been raised; major contributors will be acknowledged on plaques affixed to the shed.
The committee voted to donate $500 toward the project, citing the initiative’s potential to divert usable food waste from landfill and create beneficial compost for community use. Council liaison Robert Bicocchi was assigned to arrange for a check to be drawn from the committee’s budget and presented to Doell.
Committee members also discussed the limits of the WEAC’s formal role. Chair Norel Blundo and member Gary Dragona said they have tried to coordinate the committee’s involvement with the Borough coordinator for the project, Councilperson Erin Collins, but that Collins has not returned repeated contact attempts. Dragona said that unanswered outreach left uncertainty about WEAC’s future participation in the pilot.
Next steps: Bicocchi will arrange the committee’s $500 check and Doell will continue fundraising for the remaining project costs. The committee requested clearer coordination with the Borough coordinator before committing to additional involvement.
